Ubuntu 26.04 LTS has just been released, yet Proxmox does not immediately provide an official LXC container template for it. The reason? Because people were asking for it. This is the same as we already encounted in the past for Debian 13.
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS LXC Template for Proxmox
This LXC image is based on an official Ubuntu container base image from Proxmox 25.10 and has been prepared to integrate seamlessly with Proxmox VE. The result is a lightweight, ready-to-use LXC template that behaves like official Proxmox images and works on both Proxmox 8 and Proxmox 9.
To get started with Ubuntu 26.04 inside containers, simply place the template into your Proxmox storage and create a new container as usual. This saves you the time and effort of building your own image and allows you to immediately focus on testing applications or preparing migrations.
Why Is There No Official Ubuntu 26.04 LXC Template Yet?
Proxmox typically publishes or updates container templates only after a distribution has been validated with the Proxmox stack, including kernel compatibility, systemd behavior in containers, and upgrade paths. Even though Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is officially released, templates still require additional testing to ensure stability and consistency across supported Proxmox versions.
There is often a delay between a new Ubuntu LTS release and its availability as an official Proxmox LXC template. Until then, community-maintained templates like this one help bridge the gap and allow early adopters to start testing and preparing their environments.
