BoxyBSD – Free VPS Hosting for BSD Systems
BoxyBSD is a project I founded out of a personal need and long-standing passion for BSD systems and open infrastructure. The BSD ecosystem offers powerful, clean, and well engineered operating systems, but access to suitable hosting is often limited. Many providers focus almost exclusively on Linux and treat BSD as an afterthought or not at all. BoxyBSD exists to change that by offering a dedicated home for BSD and other Unix-like operating systems in a modern virtualized environment. BoxyBSD is a community driven VPS platform that provides free virtual servers for FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, and other BSD or Solaris based systems. The goal is to make these operating systems easily accessible for developers, students, contributors, and enthusiasts who want to learn, build, experiment, or run real services without being limited by commercial hosting constraints - including all features like reverse DNS (PTR), IPv6, IPv6 subnets and many more!
The project is designed with a strong focus on practicality and realism. BoxyBSD is not meant to be a short lived test environment. It is built to support long running systems, development workflows, public services, and open source projects that require stability and predictability. Users should be able to rely on their systems while still having the freedom to explore and experiment. From an operational perspective, BoxyBSD follows the same principles I apply in professional infrastructure work. Automation, clean configuration, and reproducibility are central aspects of the platform. The underlying infrastructure is continuously improved with a focus on performance, security, and maintainability. Decisions are made based on real world usage and long term sustainability rather than marketing driven features.
BoxyBSD is intentionally non commercial. There are no hidden upsells, no artificial limitations designed to push users into paid plans, and no interest in turning the platform into a traditional hosting business. The project exists to support the community and to strengthen the visibility and usability of BSD systems in modern environments. Another important aspect of BoxyBSD is collaboration. Feedback from users directly influences how the platform evolves. Many ideas, improvements, and refinements come from people actively using the service and sharing their experiences. This makes BoxyBSD a living project that grows alongside its community. For me personally, BoxyBSD represents a clear stance in favor of open systems, technical curiosity, and shared knowledge. It is about providing infrastructure that respects the philosophy of BSD while making it accessible to a broader audience. It is my way of contributing back to an ecosystem that has shaped how I think about operating systems, networking, and infrastructure as a whole.
