@stefano @christopher I am not sure if I'd say is becoming like . I do recall similar statements made on the Debian-User mailing list on a previous release when xorg introduced autoconfiguration. A lot of people were pissed that it was making choices for you instead of manually configuring the xorg.conf file.

Honestly, that was a good thing. Painful doesn't begin to describe it but users were unaware they could still hand-configure the file.

There has been, however, more stuff added to Linux over the last several years. Call it bloat, call it whatever you want. OSes change. But it has been gradually moving away from simplicity.

                I miss the simplicity.

However, to reply to your original post, coming from COTS solutions, sometimes the vast amount of choice can be overwhelming. For instance, when it comes to it used to just be jails. Now, it's thin, thick, classic, networking. I understand they have their places but it would be helpful to provide more detailed explanations, tutorials, or best practices for each. The FreeBSD Handbook is good but just scratches the surface but often leaves more questions. It would help with learning and in part...marketing.

On a side note: The FreeBSD Handbook is a great resource but there are opportunities to improve it, like tailoring it to new users (better empathy), best practices, architectural examples, and links to additional resources and info.

Last week I had a chat with a colleague who is highly specialized in Microsoft solutions. Young but not too young, smart, not very up to date simply because he has little time for anything else. His specialization depends entirely on where he works, not on personal interest. Lately he seemed a bit disillusioned with some choices made by "other operating systems", and he was starting to consider moving his personal projects toward Microsoft as well, since he already had the experience. Still, he said it with boredom. With the attitude of someone who is tired of wasting time.

He had heard of the BSDs but had never tried installing them. He was convinced that there were no decent hypervisors outside the Linux world and that KVM belonged to Linux alone. I had the terrible idea of showing him the BSDs, how great bhyve is, and how nvmm on NetBSD uses qemu underneath, making it almost a replacement for KVM in many setups. He lit up with the look of someone waking up from a long sleep. I also had the terrible idea of showing him illumos and its distributions. He had no clue it existed and thought old, great Solaris had been dead for years thanks to Oracle.

He called me a little while ago. He was furious. He spent the whole weekend doing tests and now he has no idea what to use among FreeBSD with bhyve, NetBSD with nvmm, and illumos with bhyve or kvm. He is slowly starting to explore jails and illumos zones. He was annoyed (in a positive way) because now he does not know what to pick since everything feels so different from what he was used to, and he found advantages in each option.

I am obviously happy about it, but I also wonder: instead of reinventing the wheel every time, would it not sometimes be better to simply broaden our horizons?

Hello, I have some news regarding my adventures in Linux again, this time I hope I am seriously able to commit. I have had a history of not committing to things, since I was a child. It has been insanely painful for me to last with something for longer than a few months or weeks. Rant aside, I am now using Fedora and I'm planning on fully engaging with the community via the Security Team and the KDE SIG, with ideas to join the Rust SIG as a means of commitment.

I recently switched to Fedora after some issues regarding my boot setup. My system at the time was an had two FAT32 partitions which were labeled for Alpine Linux and Arch Linux, one LUKS+LVM partition with swap, Alpine Linux and Arch Linux logical volumes, with UKI. My system was partially easy to maintain, but a few weeks after that install I noted Alpine was having issues with kernel modules, and I was required to use Arch for that time being. Finally, my snapping point was reached when both UEFI entries just vanished. The entire point of having two distributions at once for me was gone. After hearing that Fedora 43 was out, I went to grab a USB and a copy of Fedora Everything, and installed Fedora 43 with KDE Plasma with no OOTB issues.

I did make my own customisations later down the line, such as adopting hardened_malloc as my global malloc implementation by using secureblue's COPRA package. hardened_malloc is better regarding security than glibc's malloc especially regarding heap corruption and reduction of metadata. There are also RAM consumption benefits. This made me feel like it was a good idea to install hardened_malloc as my global allocator. This customisation did come at the cost of GTK applications bailing however, although you could fix it with LD_PRELOAD and a Bash script.

I've tried to apply for the Fedora Security Team, and KDE SIG through two sponsors and now I am simply waiting for a response. I shouldn't, and wasn't expecting a reply soon, so I'm happy to wait out the month honestly. I just have to hope the application gets through and gets read which I believe will happen. Maybe I can even try the Rust SIG.

I still have plans to use Alpine Linux. My Samsung Galaxy S9 is still not working on postmarketOS, and I want to try and port the device for the mainline Linux source code tree. I would still have to carry some of Alpine Linux's work if I did port postmarketOS as I couldn't live off of it forever. As such, I still will be using Alpine Linux mainly for my phone and maybe low-spec servers. I have sadly leeched off of Arch Linux which I do apologise for, but I didn't have anything to contribute to at that time.

That's all I have to say for now. Good night.

I'm in Australia right now. I can boot my home PC via Wake On LAN to access my files if I have to. I placed a webcam in front of it so that I can verify that it actually does so.

It's weird seeing my computer 16.500 km away from me. It feels like my own little Mars mission. Especially with how SSH feels at 300-400 ms latency.

Okay, after some more testing, looks like it's somehow related to the VPN tunnel, not the upgrade (I might have simply had bad luck with timing and noticing a problem and jumping to the conclusion that it was related to the upgrade).

Previous kernel, same tunnel, same issue.

New kernel, different tunnel, not a problem.

It was working before, and after the upgrade I don't seem to get any IPv6 default route.

I haven't had any opportunity yet to do much troubleshooting, but don't see anything obviously relevant in the Debian bug tracker or debian-user archives.
