Today on NovaLandia: "Mozilla's Secret Web Scraper Service"

Mozilla this, Mozilla that. The Mozilla corporation hates you. It hates its userbase. Mozilla desperately wants you to *stop* using the Firefox browser. It seems every single day they’re coming up wit...

Laptop isn’t bricked! Thankfully, I was able to do a fresh install of Pop!_OS. Guess I need to skip the firmware update this time.

But stuff like this is why it’s still hard for me to recommend Linux to anyone who doesn’t have the time, patience, or wherewithal to be their own tech support. It’s frustrating enough sometimes to help my non-tech-savvy relatives with their Apple devices, Windows PCs, and Android phones.

Hi, guys. I broke my Mastodon installation. Next time, I should use a server dedicated solely to Mastodon, lol, because it conflicts with my other apps, lol.

Why is it that scripts are full of completely false concepts?

I mean nobody would write normal scenes where one person is pulling a freshly baked pizza out of the ear of another person. Nobody would accept things that defy basic physics except as a particular part of the story. 🤷

However, when it comes to and , people writing scripts invent so much bullshit that any tech-savvy person needs to actively ignore it in order to keep a tiny bit of entertainment left. 🙄

Unfortunately, you actually make all non -savvy people dumber: they don't understand that this particular part of the script is fiction that for some unknown reason contradicts our reality. 🤬

IMO you should be able to write good stories that don't come with tech-lies all over it as a side-note.

Unnecessary stupid IT stuff spoils any good series or to me.

Curious that whenever someone shows me “the cool flow” they built that’s supposed to be impressive, the conversation goes the same way:

Stage 1: “But you don’t understand. You don’t like AI because you haven’t used it right. Let me show you how much you can do it with.”

Stage 2: “Here are the steps in the flow and the instructions I feed to this agent / custom GPT / Claude project. I tell it to do X, reference document Y, and aim for Z.”

Stage 3: “Now, let me show you the results it gives.”
*Writes task, presses to run the prompt.*

Stage 4: “Umm sorry it’s taking a while. It’s fast but not instant. And by the way, the prompt isn’t perfect, you can definitely make it better. I just threw this together real quick the other day. It makes some mistakes, but it’s really good.”

Stage 5: “Uuuuuuh actually don’t look at the output.” *scrolls or stops screen share or pulls device away.*
“You know it’s already doing so well, if I do more prompt engineering it will get really good but I need to give it better instructions. And it ran just fine last night, I don’t know what’s up with it. And this is a cheap model, if we use another model it will be better.”

Stage 6: “You know, you really shouldn’t judge this so much. The technology will improve, it will get there sooner than you know and then you’ll regret not trying it sooner.”

So curious that this keeps happening 🤷‍♀️

Today on NovaLandia: "Coming to Terms with AI, or Waiting for the Pop"

Lately, and as time marches forward, the AI bubble seems to be inching closer to the pop. What this means for the US economy is … up in the air, I guess. I honestly don’t know if it would change anyth...
