Is anybody still using the Ally assistant from ? If not, which AI thing do you recommend for conversational inquiries, usually pointing the phone camera at documents, appliances etc. and asking questions?

Ally doesn't seem to connect me to anything anymore.

    No, Mastodon, I am serious:

If AI companies are shredding books
And Google is nerfing search engines to make you ask AI

    What do we do?

Like, I am the generation that has learned to use a card catalog. I can do archival searching, and annotating my own books.

I am just in a place of general anxiety about the future of accessing, saving, and sharing information.

    Any thoughts welcome.

Installing on my new laptop to escape the massive and bloat madness of . Opened the terminal and it is a real Unix, all my favorite tools and utilities are there from decades ago. Nothing has been "depreciated" or "Unix is dead" that and their were constantly gaslighting about.

It's all there, even CDE/Motif, xv, oclock, xeyes, finger, ...

Since this is a new laptop with new GPU and all that, I am having to do some scraping from a Linux distribution to get Xorg working. Even GhostBSD didn't have all the new drivers yet. But this is Unix and the included documentation and build tools are amazing. Shame that the Linux Foundation is heavily invested by the AI goons. But this is a win for me😸

When the book-burning by GenAI/LLM companies was revealed, the defences of this were "oh the books aren't rare" and "oh they're only buying books from pulping companies that will be destroyed anyway".

Neither of these is true. The AI companies are buying bulk orders of obscure titles from ordinary booksellers:

          theguardian.com/technology/202

None of these are bestsellers, and none of them are checked to see if they are archived anywhere. But they *will* be physically destroyed by the AI companies after sucking out all the info from them.

I make dry remarks to Claude when humans talk shit.

<reddit.com/r/BSD/comments/1vfj>, for example. My prompt concluded:

"Somehow, I imagine that it's useful for end users to have userspace."

Uncle Claude's conclusion included an ego massage:

This summer the EU put teeth behind software and AI security on two fronts at once — and I wrote up both.

              1) The AI Act's GPAI enforcement went live Aug 2: fines up to 3% of turnover, mandatory red-teaming, weight security. simonroses.com/2026/08/the-day

              2) The new Product Liability Directive makes a missing patch a legally defective product — and voids your EULA disclaimer. simonroses.com/2026/08/when-a-

Artists opposed to AI built a social network/art sharing platform called Cara.

Some sloperator apparently scraped it and all the other pixel salad enjoyers are ecstatically laughing their asses off.

( Original reddit post has apparently been deleted, but the founder of Cara has tweeted about this incident quite a bit: nitter.net/zemotion )

[AMA] I scraped all of Cara

Will answer questions here or on Discord.

TL;DR: I scraped all of Cara, an anti-AI art platform! It was a fun project, happy to answer any questions here :)

Some statistics:
· Just over 12 million works in total
· ~12 TB worth of images
· On average ~2.3 images per post
· Average image size, ~0.95 MB

Total cost was just under $10 for the entire scrape.

Will release the list of URLs soon! I may soon have a way to remove Glaze/Nightshade, please join Discord if you would be willing to help! E.g. contribute your GPU to a pool to process images :)

To all you copyright trolls out there who will inevitably try to report this post, I am not distributing any image files! Distributing URLs has been shown countless times not to infringe copyright, take for example LAION-5B, etc.

The causal link between source code and assembly is different than what's between coding and source code. From machine code to assembly to source code to the ecosystem of code libraries, there is a causal chain with material reality (electrons positioned on silicon chips) on one end and human experience at the other.

Probabilistic text prediction breaks that chain; you can't decode it in the same way, even if you're as smart as Elon Musk says he is.

But there's a larger point here.

16GB VRAM is enough to run it as your main architect for coding, with other models for implementation.
