No, Mastodon, I am serious:
If AI companies are shredding books
And Google is nerfing search engines to make you ask AI
What do we do?
Like, I am the generation that has learned to use a card catalog. I can do archival searching, and annotating my own books.
I am just in a place of general anxiety about the future of accessing, saving, and sharing information.
Any thoughts welcome.
Installing #FreeBSD on my new laptop to escape the massive #AI and bloat madness of #Linux. Opened the terminal and it is a real Unix, all my favorite tools and utilities are there from decades ago. Nothing has been "depreciated" or "Unix is dead" that #Redhat and their #systemD were constantly gaslighting about.
It's all there, even CDE/Motif, xv, oclock, xeyes, finger, ...
Since this is a new laptop with new GPU and all that, I am having to do some scraping from a Linux distribution to get Xorg working. Even GhostBSD didn't have all the new drivers yet. But this is Unix and the included documentation and build tools are amazing. Shame that the Linux Foundation is heavily invested by the AI goons. But this is a win for me😸
When the book-burning by GenAI/LLM companies was revealed, the defences of this were "oh the books aren't rare" and "oh they're only buying books from pulping companies that will be destroyed anyway".
Neither of these is true. The AI companies are buying bulk orders of obscure titles from ordinary booksellers:
None of these are bestsellers, and none of them are checked to see if they are archived anywhere. But they *will* be physically destroyed by the AI companies after sucking out all the info from them.

I make dry remarks to Claude when humans talk shit.
<https://www.reddit.com/r/BSD/comments/1vfjaps/comment/p3u2sz3/>, for example. My prompt concluded:
"Somehow, I imagine that it's useful for end users to have userspace."
Uncle Claude's conclusion included an ego massage:
"… Your intuition is right: userspace is essential. …"
What's not to like?

This summer the EU put teeth behind software and AI security on two fronts at once — and I wrote up both.
1) The AI Act's GPAI enforcement went live Aug 2: fines up to 3% of turnover, mandatory red-teaming, weight security. https://simonroses.com/2026/08/the-day-the-ai-act-grew-teeth-gpai-enforcement-goes-live/
2) The new Product Liability Directive makes a missing patch a legally defective product — and voids your EULA disclaimer. https://simonroses.com/2026/08/when-a-missing-patch-becomes-a-defective-product-the-new-eu-product-liability-directive/
A regulator that fines you, a courtroom that bills you. Two doors, both now open. #AIAct #ProductLiability #CyberSecurity #EU #Bloig #AI
Artists opposed to AI built a social network/art sharing platform called Cara.
Some sloperator apparently scraped it and all the other pixel salad enjoyers are ecstatically laughing their asses off.
( Original reddit post has apparently been deleted, but the founder of Cara has tweeted about this incident quite a bit: https://nitter.net/zemotion )
They really are fucking idiots. The older I get the more I realise there needs to be a minimum understanding of politics before you’re allowed to vote. Three easy questions at the polling booth, get two wrong and you’re not allowed to vote

New #AI espionage powers trigger Putin camera scare
Russia paused #surveillance system after killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader exposed how AI can be used on #CCTV to target enemies
Governments have long known cameras can be penetrated with ease by experienced hackers or spies such as Israel’s elite signals intel. But advances in AI in recent years have enabled them to pinpoint specific behaviours and patterns in the vast visual data sets that result

The causal link between source code and assembly is different than what's between #AI coding and source code. From machine code to assembly to source code to the ecosystem of code libraries, there is a causal chain with material reality (electrons positioned on silicon chips) on one end and human experience at the other.
Probabilistic text prediction breaks that chain; you can't decode it in the same way, even if you're as smart as Elon Musk says he is.
But there's a larger point here.
Hey, are you Twitchy? By which I mean, do you produce content or interact with #Twitch streaming? Cause if so, #Amazon just flipped a switch saying they can take all your data to train their #LLM (#ai). They made it opt out, because, according to a statement made by the company's chief product officer, Mike #Minton: "If it was opt-in, nobody would opt-in." (2nd link has video)
You won’t give it to us, so we’re just gonna grab it by the binary. We’re the #EpsteinClass, what are you gonna do?
Well; click on your account icon in the top-right corner of the page, and then select Settings from the list. From there, navigate to Security and Privacy, and then scroll all the way down the page until you spot the Training for Generative AI option at the bottom. Untoggle it to turn it off.
Fuck off, you rapacious MBA-infected monkeys.

Qwen released v3.8 of their 27B parameter model today, as open weights. This is how the AI bubble pops, when you're able to run extremely competent models on regular "gaming" GPUs.
16GB VRAM is enough to run it as your main architect for coding, with other models for implementation.
I've posted my settings in https://matrix.to/#/%23LocalLLaMa:argot.se if you're local-AI curious.

@BenAveling thanks. I'm probably that bit of both.
I don't know whether this (il y a quatre mois) was GenAI, but it did amuse me to use ChatGPT when an anti-AI protestor elsewhere was hijacking things:

Did you know #openSUSE has its own #AI model for legal compliance? Cavil-Qwen3.5-4B scans code for #license declarations and copyright notices; it runs locally on modest #hardware, fully transparent, and available on #HuggingFace. 🤖🐧 https://news.opensuse.org/2026/03/16/os-releases-updated-legal-classification-model/

Lies #AI has told me today:
Okular doesn't support layers in PDF documents (it does)
Documents are required by law to overlay the Spanish text with English text after machine translation
Humans can read spanish text overlayed with english text
Acrobat doesn't support layers (it does)
For business to the march away from #windows #linux has to overcome the problem with #PFD and #Acrobat, #DWG and #autodesk, #SWKS and #dassaultsystemes.

Nurtuje mnie kilka kwestii, a większośc artykułów to mało praktycznych przykładów czy z życia wziętych doświadczeń.
