So, my move to a BSD isn't going as quickly as I would like, and I wanted to get off of Debian since the whole vote to go pro-AI debacle. I figured moving to a Linux distribution that has a very strong anti-AI policy would be the right choice until I can get a BSD installed properly on my desktop or extra laptop. More than a year ago, I tried @elementary. It's an awesome project but I could never get my workflow working with the desktop environment. Most definitely not the fault of Elementary. I just have a weird workflow. Earlier today, I decided to give the latest release another try. I'm going to keep it on here and actually work with the desktop environment, instead of giving up after a day.

The project is staunchly anti-AI. And that is important to me. I know the Linux kernel is tainted but unless we want to fork the kernel from a version prior to Torvalds allowing the use of AI, we're just going to have to deal with it. I don't like it, but I'm no developer and who in the world would want to take on a forked project as big as the Linux kernel? Yikes!

Anyway, I'm really liking how I have Elementary setup on my ThinkPad T14 and I'm going to keep using it for now. Who knows? It might keep me on Linux with one piece of my hardware even after moving to BSD.

I am intrigued by #NetBSD and I think I'll try dual booting when I have some free time. My big question is, how do you fill gaps when there isn't an application available in pkgsrc? Say for instance I wanted to run Vivaldi, am I SOL until they decide to port over, if ever? Or, do you run a virtualized application instead and if so, is that performant?

I see that #FreeBSD has the larger following but I don't like their fence sitting on LLM contributions and don't want to get into it only for them to make a decision I disagree with.

I spent all this time migrating to #Arch only for Linus to give me the ick. Which, of course really sucks because I tend to like Arch. But, I think history repeats itself in a way here and it's time to start looking elsewhere and seeing if the jump is realistic.

No time to play with CoW today but did log back into the machine after running around on my main box (Plasma) all day.

Swaylock needs some themeing but once in and seeing the partially modified twm I was working on yesterday it gave me a big smile. Simple and sharp!

Anyway, still going to pick at this in the background. Need to figure out how to manage minimized apps and launching and stuff using waybar, waybar-wlr-taskbar, cowiconbox, sway*, and friends.

So customizable! You can make your own desktop paradigms for the most part. I love it! Ha.

Is there a way to create animations? Something like a Picom add-on but for Wayland?

I installed Budgie (iirc 10.10.2) on my test box just to have a look - launching from sddm gives a login loop so I'll ignore that for now as that's more time to debug than I'm willing to invest ATM.
