Some years ago when my bike was stolen, I looked into tamper alarms & this was exactly why I dropped the idea: Nothing of the sort existed that didn't rely on some startup basically remaining in business AND behaving in good faith forever.
For those following along at home, that's two things which will never happen.
Tom boostedYesterday, one of the younger electricians was telling me about the beauty of the new alarm systems he installs. While acknowledging the quality of my current one, he said, "It uses a SIM card and calls you. The new ones are 4G or Wi-Fi and use the cloud, so notifications go straight to your smartphone, it's not calling anymore."
I asked him, "And what if the cloud stops working? Why should I have to depend on the company’s cloud to receive alerts from my alarm? My alarm is 10 years old and works perfectly. Can you say with certainty that the company’s cloud will still be effective 10 years from now?"
He looked puzzled for a moment, then admitted he had never thought about it.
The real problem is that people do not realize what this means until things actually happen.

The problem isn't the negative cash-flow. The problem is the ROI proposition.
Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon are not spending hundreds of billions because they have a clear roadmap to absorb all white-collar labor; they are spending because not building the infrastructure risks total irrelevance if a competitor solves key reasoning capabilities first.
a) Won't happen with current models.
b) Oracle will fold first, and then bells start ringing
c) ROI proposition disappears when clients turn to China
I see no sense in the current trajectory. So: kick tech values out, incl. ETFs. Unless you have a strategy and can hedge the risk. My take.
My view on the recent Codeberg drama:
https://gagliardoni.net/#20260724_codeberg_drama
Codeberg voting members have the right to decide the policy of their association, and I understand if a community is averse to anything that is AI- or Web3-related. I understand it, but I don't agree with it, because it's 2026, and if you still think you can just stick your head in the sand and wish for these ugly bad things to go away, well, I have bad news for you.
To me, this is a perfect recipe to relegate Codeberg to irrelevance. And we are already seeing the beginning of a new exodus.
Here is my conspiracy theory: the vote was pushed or manipulated from the inside by Big Tech. Whether this is true or not, one thing is sure: folks at Microsoft, GitHub, OpenAI etc. are now popping champagne.

Look how well THAT worked out for them. It's been a living nightmare, the successful colonization of the #tech sector by #conservatism (i.e. Christofascism basically) but watching the Democrats flailing around uselessly has had its macabre entertainment value. The mainstream Dems seem to have no other strategy than to keep double and trebling and quadrupling down on the stale Clintonite methods.
They weren't popular at the time. I voted for Bill Clinton. I tried to make myself believe he was a good change of pace. But no hep Democratic voter really liked that he was obviously so smarmy and superficial and oozing with corruption.

I think the most important question is: why does anyone comply with what one incurious, self-centered, and self-important man, Linus Torvalds, says?
Why is that most important? Because Linux does not belong to Linus Torvalds. It belongs to the world. Torvalds only gets to dictate if the people who are best-positioned to take that power from him fail to do so. From where I sit (as an outsider), he should have been removed from the project, or at least have his dictatorial power removed, long ago, and the primary problem is that there is no structure or will to actually do that.
Under these conditions Linux is a hierarchical, and therefore right-wing, project. The project allows a single man to dictate the future evolution of a global good. Let's drop the illusion that it is "free" or "open".
