Wenn eine Instanz im Fediverse ihren Betrieb einstellen muss, geht damit immer auch ein Stück gewachsene Gemeinschaft verloren. Gleichzeitig kann ich sehr gut verstehen, dass Administratorinnen und Administratoren irgendwann an einen Punkt kommen können, an dem der Aufwand, die Verantwortung oder auch die persönlichen Umstände einen Weiterbetrieb nicht mehr zulassen.

Hinter einer Instanz steckt schließlich weit mehr, als irgendwo einen Server laufen zu lassen: Updates, Sicherheit, Backups, Moderation, Support, technische Probleme – und nicht zuletzt die Verantwortung für eine Gemeinschaft von Menschen. Vieles davon geschieht ehrenamtlich und bleibt für die meisten Nutzerinnen und Nutzer unsichtbar.

Gerade deshalb finde ich den Austausch und die gegenseitige Unterstützung unter den Administratorinnen und Administratoren im Fediverse so wichtig. Wir betreiben zwar unterschiedliche Instanzen und unterschiedliche Fediverse-Dienste, aber viele Herausforderungen ähneln sich. Wissen teilen, Erfahrungen weitergeben und sich gegenseitig unterstützen kann dabei helfen, diese Last auf mehr Schultern zu verteilen.

Mein Dank gilt allen, die solche Instanzen betreiben und damit überhaupt erst die vielfältige, dezentrale Struktur des Fediverse ermöglichen. 💚

Und wer Kontakte auf toot.community hat: Gebt die Information bitte weiter und bietet, wenn möglich, Unterstützung beim Umzug an. Manchmal kann schon ein kleiner Hinweis oder eine helfende Hand viel bewirken.

Last week of summer school vacation. Kiddo and me used the time to have lunch at IKEA and also the new Korean Restaurant at Oranienburger Strasse.

The other kiddo managed to catch a summer flu and passed it on to me. So the tail end of the week I was slightly miserable and stayed home. Didn’t drove to the countryside to avoid spreading the virus.

Tried to boost the immune system with some ginger shots and lots of garlic 😀

On Friday kiddo and me took a trip to the Alexa shopping centre. She was mostly interested in books and vinyl. Eventually bought “Purple Rain” from Prince on Vinyl. Couldn’t be prouder as a dad 😉

Apparently the trend to print cheap plastic toys with a 3D printer that we’ve seen in China has arrived in Germany. Thalia was selling 3D-printed stuff from a German brand “Spiegelburg”.

Also fiddled a lot with N8N, Paperless and LiteLLM this week to optimise my document workflow. Wrote about it here

Pulled out DeltaChat again as I was curious about their Channel and Group features. Apparently one can set up a Channel to share with other that works as a one distribution from the Initiator to the Subscribers. They can react, but not post or response in the Channel.

Groups work as bidirectional as one would expect. One thing to keep in mind is, that new members will only be added to the channel or group once the initiator comes online. Apparently this can be solved with an always on bot that run’s somewhere.

I currently don’t have any real plans to use these features, was just curious.

You can use services like https://urlexpander.net or install an app (I like Link Unshortener (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/link-unshortener/id1506953658)) to find the ultimate destination of a shortened link, and then post that instead.

Remember, all URLs in #Mastodon count as 23 characters, no matter how long the actual URL is, so there really is no benefit to shortening your URLs.

First Mastodon 4.6.x to 4.7.0 upgrade performed, and everything was perfectly fine.
I'll just wait to be sure the other themes will be compatible (like the great BirdUI by @rolle ) and I'll make a plan to upgrade the BSD Cafe instances.

This list is separate from my other blocklists because these domains are included due to software security concerns, not content or user behavior. 😉

Of course, I have also updated block_spam_scam_users.csv. Your Misskey or Mastodon feed will be so much cleaner and clutter-free once you remove those repeating spam and scam users! 🥳

Spannende Zahlen vom ZDF: 67 % der Befragten sind offen für alternative soziale Medien. 63 % haben eine Plattform bereits bewusst weniger genutzt oder verlassen.

Und das Fediverse? Das ZDF nennt hier stellvertretend Mastodon: 6 % nutzen es bereits regelmäßig. Bluesky kommt auf 4 %.

Besonders interessant: 38 % kennen Alternativen zu den großen Konzernplattformen schlicht noch nicht. Aber nur 5 % halten sie für zu kompliziert.

Das Problem des Fediverse scheint also weniger die Technik zu sein als seine Bekanntheit.

Dabei bietet es genau die Alternative zur Abhängigkeit von einzelnen Konzernen: dezentral, föderiert und nicht in der Hand eines einzelnen Plattformkonzerns.

Das ZDF und 3sat sind übrigens selbst längst dabei und haben ihre X-Auftritte 2024 zugunsten unter anderem eigener Fediverse-Auftritte aufgegeben.

And I’m really impressed with the work @imanijoy has put into researching user needs with surveys, interviews, and round tables. The reason Mastodon (and the wider Fediverse that it is part of) doesn't go down is because all its servers are totally independent. One Fedi server might go down, but that doesn't affect the other servers at all.

That's one of the many advantages of decentralisation, that there is no central point of failure.

Centralised networks go down because they depend on one central organisation's infrastructure.

Having some really frustrating problems with our postgres database for this mastodon instance. When running out database dump (backup) scripts we hit a fatal error relating to missing or corrupted toast values:

`Dumping the contents of table "status_edits" failed: ... ERROR: missing chunk number 0 for toast value 123456 in pg_toast_123456`

This happened before and I manually nulled out those values, but suddenly this week again a corruption. What should I check first?
