#Mastodon reporting of posts (as opposed to reporting of accounts) currently fails if the offending poster immediately blocks the person they at-notified.

This serves to abet the efforts of burner harassment accounts, which aggressively spam threads, only to immediately block participants in said threads. Yet the notifications still reach those users, even getting cached in filtered notifications.

So long as the user sees the offending notification, their ability to report same should not be thwarted by a tactic of the harasser. The post reporting workflow should allow reporting to go forward even if the user doing the reporting has been blocked.

Just as it does when reporting the harasser's account directly. This latter case works even after being blocked by the harasser. There is no reason reporting that starts from a post rather than from the account of said post should not submit just as readily.

After 1,300 days (3 years 6 months give or take) running my own Mastodon server in my basement, the lesson is, you can run your own Mastodon server in your basement.

It basically just works. You learn how to do the maintenance and then it’s not so bad. No one has trouble finding you. Your posts can still go viral (but only if you’re cool, which I am not, but it has happened accidentally once as a PoC).

Federation works!

Ich probiere gerade das #Mastodon #Terminal Programm #tooi und habe dafür extra #kitty installiert, weil damit das Anzeigen von Bildern ohne weitere Eingriffe möglich sein soll. In der Tat funktioniert diese Kombination aus dem Stehgreif. Doch ein Terminal-Fenster mit drei geöffneten Tabs, in denen jeweils eine angemeldete Mastodon-Instanz läuft, kommt am Ende auf ungefähr 800 MB Arbeitsspeicher. Meine Absicht, schlanker als mit diesen aufgeblähten Browser Monstern unterwegs zu sein, erreiche ich damit nicht wirklich.

Aber davon ab ist "tooi" tatsächlich eine taugliche Alternative … falls noch jemand etwas in der Art sucht.

• Full Drafts Support: A complete end-to-end draft flow. It includes auto-save, the ability to edit existing drafts, and a smart cancel confirmation that either discards a new draft or restores the original state if you were editing. It supports replies, quotes, polls, and media metadata.

• Trending Posts: Added a new trending timeline type with proper offset pagination support.

• Timeline Position Improvements: Added extra protection to stop SwiftUI from overwriting your saved scroll position when the view disappears or goes to the background. If a saved post can't be found in the cache, the app will now try a direct status fetch before giving up.

• UI & Navigation Fixes: Tapping Content Warnings (CW), "Show Filtered Post", or "Show More" now goes through an inline-action guard, fixing the bug where tapping them would accidentally trigger row navigation into the thread. Filtered posts also get proper bottom padding so the list separator doesn't sit on top of the button.

• Instance Compatibility & Tweaks: Added customizable timeout settings for slower instances (like snac on older hardware). I also fixed the 405 error when setting alt text on GoToSocial, and updated marker sync to strictly align with Mastodon’s documented form shape.

• Testing focus: I've implemented search fixes ensuring queries stay locked to the account you are searching from. If you are on GoToSocial, please test this thoroughly and let me know how it behaves. Since this build is the result of a massive merge, keep an eye out for any regressions.

Mastodon - bin unter Linux von Hyperspace auf Tokodon gewechselt und bisher sehr zufrieden. Benachrichtigungen / Erwähnungen sind besser gelöst, und die Suche funktioniert besser.

Leider wurde auf mastodon.social die globale timeline deaktiviert. Das finde ich etwas unglücklich. Um daran trotzdem "teilnehmen" zu können, habe ich auf nrw.social einen weiteren Account eingerichtet. Freiheit durch Optionen 😀

Does anyone have recommendations for a Mastodon fork that doesn't require visitors to enable JavaScript to view basic content? The JavaScript dependency is a security risk and user hostile. Visitors should not be required to enable JavaScript when simply visiting a Mastodon server. Plus, the recommendation to use a native app doesn't even work for all Mastodon/ActivityPub instances.

Also, the requirement for JavaScript makes the Mastodon development team seem incompetent. They can't even make a basic web site that doesn't require JavaScript. I could do that when I was in middle school.

One reason I greatly prefer Mastodon over Bluesky is that Bluesky (much like Twitter before it) cultivates this very elaborate game of hostility theater. You're encouraged to voice your opinions as inflammatorily as possible, both to impress the people who are on your side and to upset the people who aren't. Bad faith arguments become a kind of litmus test, filtering out the people who unconditionally support you from everybody else.
