ich schreibe meine Abschlussarbeit an der FernUni Hagen und untersuche zentrale und dezentrale soziale Netzwerke (X/Mastodon und Reddit/Lemmy).

Hierfür suche ich Personen (Ü18) für ein max. 30-minütiges Interview, die von X bzw. Twitter zu Mastodon gewechselt sind (die Nutzung beider Plattformen ist möglich).

Wichtig: Das Interview wird zur wissenschaftlichen Auswertung (anonym und vertraulich) aufgezeichnet.

We had a production outage on our Mastodon instance burningboard.net:

Root-cause analysis:

At around 16:23 today, the Linux OOMKiller did terminate two processes: java (Elasticsearch) and a PostgreSQL checkpoint process.

The termination of the pg checkpointer did put the database in a weird state (all connection attempts just saying "the database system is shutting down").

Immediate resolve:

pg_ctlcluster 17 main stop -m immediate
systemctl restart postgresql

Actions taken:
- Added 4GB of additional swap-space to the system
- Upgraded PostgreSQL to Version 18.0
- Added memory-limits in the systemd overrides for Elasticsearch

Everything operational again 🙂

It will be extremely useful to add alt-text to boosted images with no alt-text or to provide translation for Russian memes boosted by myself.

Currently adopted practice with "RE: link to original toot" doesn't allow to see both my text and quoted toot contents on one screen in both Web interface and Tusky

Essa é uma funcionalidade que poderia ser até mais destacada, pois já tentei fazer o mesmo em outro servidor que também suporta Markdown (Akkoma/Mangane), sem sucesso.

SNAC é um servidor ActivityPub extremamente minimalista e, por isso, bem peculiar, porém apresenta algumas funções únicas, como essa. Ele não é ideal para quem quer utilizá-lo majoritariamente com aplicativos clientes feitos para a API #Mastodon, pois seu funcionamento é bem distinto daquele mais comum e não tem o compromisso de apresentar as mesmas soluções para as mesmas funcionalidades. Mesmo assim, há casos em que se adequa muito bem. Se não faz questão de ficar o tempo todo interagindo com a [Federação ActivityPub]() ou, por exemplo, se pretende criar um perfil para publicação automatizada por algum na máquina em que ele está rodando, isso fica muito fácil, pois já possui tudo que precisa no comando, além de ser pouco exigente em requisitos de memória e processamento. Pode ser compilado em praticamente qualquer plataforma POSIX e seus arquivos ficam numa árvore única de diretórios, tornando a transferência para outra máquina relativamente bem simples. Sua interface na Web é simples para quem utiliza e também para quem lê, ao sequer exigir a execução de JavaScript. Apenas HTML e CSS.

Como analista de tecnologia da informação, especulando sobre o ciclo de vida dos sistemas, considero provável que, por ter mínimas dependências, SNAC demore bem mais que outros servidores mais complexos para se inviabilizar ou precisar sofrer reescritas drásticas, desde que se forme uma comunidade maior que o mantenha ativo se porventura faltar seu criador.
