I still can't even that my now nearly 80 year old mom has been on Fedora on a thinkpad e520 (2011) for a decade and it all just works.

I checked her laptop just now and it's fully up to date on fedora 43, so she's done like 20 version upgrades autonomously too. The battery has degraded a little but the whole thing still works fine and she's very happy with it.

This is how things should be, this is peak computing tbh.

Egal ob Windows oder macOS: Beides kommt mir nicht mehr ins Haus. Der Nachwuchs wächst direkt mit Linux auf. Wer Kindern heute ein Betriebssystem beibringt, sollte ihnen nicht zuerst zeigen, wie man mit Werbung, Telemetrie und Kontozwang lebt. Die großen Desktop-Systeme entwickeln sich immer stärker weg vom Werkzeug und hin zur überwachten Plattform. Was früher Betriebssystem war, ist heute oft nur noch Überwachungssoftware mit Desktop-Oberfläche. Linux ist nicht perfekt, aber es behandelt Nutzer eher als Menschen und nicht als Datenquelle.

Auch das ist #Linux: Mein Netbook Baujahr 2012 (mit sage und schreibe 2x 1,1Ghz-Celeron CPU, 4GGB RAM, Onboardgrafik) fährt mit dem 6.19er Kernel eine Major-Version höher als mein Gaming-PC Baujahr 2017 (mit 4x 4,2GHz-Core CPU, 16GB RAM und GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GPU), weil Nvidia die 1060 in Rente geschickt hat und der Legacy-Treiber nur noch mit dem 6.18-LTS-Kernel tut.

Mal wieder #Linux mit Spielen getestet. Dies mal #CachyOS.
Funktioniert generell ganz gut inkl. #HDR.
Zwei Haken:
1. sieht weniger beeindruckend aus wie unter W10. Irgendwie viel zu viel Kontrast. Und Gefummel ist es weiterhin.
2: die Lüfter bringen den Rechner zum Abheben. Also irgendwas stimmt da noch nicht.

Orrr. Nervt.

Wusstet ihr, dass `grep -r "fehler" .` euer gesamtes Projektverzeichnis nach dem Wort "fehler" durchsucht? Klingt banal, bis man um 2 Uhr nachts verzweifelt diesen einen Tippfehler sucht, der den Build zerschossen hat. 🔍

Spoiler: Es war natürlich in der Datei, die man zuletzt angeschaut hätte.

Frisch #ArchLinux installiert. Fürs #WLAN ist ein USB-Stick zuständig, der als #wlan0 eingebunden wird. Hat während der Installation bestens funktioniert. Auch im fertigen System heißt er wlan0, allerdings findet #iwctl jetzt plötzlich keine Netzwerke mehr. Ziehe ich den Stick im laufenden Betrieb heraus und stecke ihn kurz darauf wieder hinein, wird er zu #wlan1 und iwctl findet nun wieder Netzwerke und verbindet sich. Nach einem Neustart ist alles hinfällig.

Stundenlang habe ich jetzt gesucht und herumprobiert. Leider erfolglos.

Hat jemand eine Idee, was hier falsch läuft? Danke im Voraus.

Ok, this is a dangerous question, but I still have to ask. For all you fellow #Linux users I'm looking to replace my text editor. I am not and will not be an emacs user and I'm not a fan of vi/vim. I used nano, but really disliked it. I really enjoy tilde for the most part (though I do wish it didn't actually take over mouse selection to such an extent that I can't copy/paste from outside the terminal in a GUI) but tilde seems to be dead. The dev seems to be MIA and the packages no longer work. We can still manually build it (though it's not static and you can't move the source files after building or it quits working) but I assume eventually that's going to stop working.

Is there an editor kind of modernish like tilde but, you know, not dead and not emacs-based and a TUI?

I'm on elementary OS. I see there is a "color deficiency assistance" filter in display setting. I was surprised by it because today is my second day using eOS, and I never heard of a Linux distro being very user-friendly and as humane as having this option.

I was messing with the #debian installer and its disk partitioning. I don't understand this at all. This is plain stupid.

If the partitioning scheme includes swap, it should be the last partition on the disk. This installer frequently puts it in the absolute worst possible place: the middle.

That's dumb, especially in a virtual world where hard disks trivially change size.

See, what if I decide to make this disk bigger? What if I decide I need more swap? If swap is the last partition, it's trivial.

1. Increase the virtual disk size
2. Boot to single user mode
3. Delete the swap partition
4. Expand the penultimate partition to encompass the new space I created, minus the amount of swap I want.
5. Grow the filesystem in the penultimate partition
6. Create the swap partition in the final position again.
7. Boot.

But when you stick swap in the middle of the fscking disk then it makes changes really non-trivial. You really can't change anything.

The only partitioning scheme that gets it right is the "All files in one partition" scheme. Since there's just the one root filesystem, it puts swap at the end.

Also, it appears that you cannot change the size of partitions in this view. Like, if I wasn't happy with 1.1G of swap, tough noogies. That surprises me. The entire POINT of an interactive installer like this is to allow me to specify high-level things like "Gimme 2G of swap" and have the installer recalculate all the start/stop partition values and such. I've done plenty of debian installs, but this is the first time I stopped to notice how bad this is.

Some of you may argue that the problems I cite aren't important. But I defy you to come up with a good reason why one should put the swap partition in the middle of the partition table. You can argue it doesn't hurt, but you cannot argue that it does something good.

The firmware updates took fine from Linux. Not sure why it was crashing on Windows. After updating from Linux live USB, I rebooted to Windows and checked again with Lenovo System Update. All firmware updates had been applied.

I am getting a few ThinkPad L14 Gen 1 laptops ready with Windows 11.

The first laptop took a while, but updated fine. I did all updates with Snappy Driver Installer, Windows Update and Lenovo System Update. Had to manually remove the touchpad driver and load that again.

On the second laptop, the BIOS update will not apply with Lenovo System Update. It crashes Windows and restarts.

I am going to test the memory. If that checks out fine, I will try to update the BIOS with 'fwupd' in Linux.

#1. It just works like my #Windows11 OS computer with no surprises.
#2. I expected a huge learning curve, and initially that curve existed. But no more. It just works.
#3. I expected new and exciting revelations when using Linux. Cool new thing with cool new software and cool new uses in my life. That didn't happen.

Linux Mint just works for me.

HaloWars2 ist unter Windows11 wieder so ein Krampf wie einst mit Windows10, gelegentliche Abstürze mitten im Spiel ohne nachvollziehbaren Grund und Neuinstallation schafft nur bedingt Abhilfe für ein paar Runden. Anstrengend und somit nichts für mich langfristig. 😡

Battlefield6 ist ein Witz und für mich der Nagel von EA! 🖕

GTA5 ist online unspielbar für mich wegen Cheatern sowie anderen Problemen. 🤮

Kurzum, bin endgültig fertig und geheilt von Windows sowie vermeintlicher Notwendigkeit dafür.

Linux Mint kann und hat alles was ich brauche, nur wesentlich Ressourcen effizienter. 😉
